Take a bow, the kitchen and front-of-house staff at Quo Vadis. It's a winning experience, for quality, professionalism and innovation.
One of the signature dishes - the smoked eel sandwich - is one of the most extraordinary courses you'll ever be served.
Face it, eel does not generally lend itself to being served between two slices of bread. But this creation, topped by a generous dollop of mustardy horseradish, is something else. It isn't easy to manhandle (bits fall out, and you do risk being covered in it), but it's an architectural masterpiece. Worth trying, if only once.
Our entire meal was a treat from start to finish. Even the reception was memorable, with a vast, unwieldy dried flower arrangement dominating the lobby.
A boulevardier and a dry martini to kick off, then - with a hearty Malbec for company - we swung into the courses; a hearty fillet steak for her, a cod/mussel/clam and herb combo for me. The accompanying chips were as good as chips can be; soft centre, crisp outer, full of flavour. Why can't all chips be like this?
What's good about QV is that the menu isn't so laden with options that you find yourself wavering, then wading. It makes sense to focus the chefs' skills on a limited number of dishes, and do those well. It's a regime others could and should follow.
It's not cheap. It doesn't pretend to be (pommes frites £6, fennel salad £6). But for a special meal, it's hard to beat. The service was good-humoured and efficient; impossible to fault. Our bill came to a smidgen over £100 a head, but we had the works. We really did.
The surroundings are great, and you stagger out into Soho feeling like you're a king and queen.
