Tanaka of Tokyo Central Honolulu Reviews from The Last Year
Interesting entrance from an elevator off of kalakaua.
As you are whisked up to the 3rd floor you kinda wish there was air conditioning in the muggy elevator. Door opens and you are greeted by a very dark interior. The restaurant is bustling with many guests situated around a chef doing tricks around the grill. We were seated with another party and I kinda felt sorry for the other party because our group had distracting little kids. Plus we were a little loud. So the seating with strangers is not my preference but that's what we got, The menu selections and prices are fair and all inclusive of salad, soup, rice and dessert. You just pick your main. We ordered chicken and steak.. and it was soo entertaining. The chef did tricks while cooking our food and it was fun to watch. Flip of steaks, tossing foods high up while seasoning and talking. That is a lot to do so hopefully these guys get paid more. Garlic fried rice and meat are my favorites combos. Green tea ice cream is super good and thick. Overall a good experience. Will return one day!
our chef cyrus was amazing.
He cooked some really good food 10 out of 10 recommend :) The server was also really nice and gave us an amazing experience. Definitely coming back
My boyfriend and I had an amazing time at Tanaka of Tokyo
My boyfriend and I had an amazing time at Tanaka of Tokyo during our first night in Waikiki! Immediately the ambience is moody and dimly-lit, and serves to be a very nice and intimate atmosphere. Austin was our chef and definitely made our night an entertaining and enjoyable one! on top of that, the rest of the staff was extremely kind and attentive and we felt very well taken care of. Food and drinks were great as well, but combined with other factors, makes the dining experience at Tanaka immaculate! Thanks Austin!
The cook, Patrick made our dinner amazing.
The food was delicious but most of all, his humor and charisma was top notch. Definitely enjoyed my night and would come back again! Thank you.
Jonah the Cook did an excellent job for us.
However, I cannot say the same for the business itself. They have extremely small portion sizes. You will end up spending $150 to feed a small family. And the food you get is enough to feed one person. Ridiculous! --------- It seems the owner wasn't happy about my honest review. I forgot to also add that there was a $10 per plate sharing fee for my kids and my wife. We ended up spending $150 after taxes and tip. The food was not even enough for myself to enjoy. You could pretend that my review isn't about you and your business practices, but it is, and you should be ashamed of yourself. This is the highest form of corporate greed. --------- Yes, you're right, it is my job to warn potential customers about greedy businesses like yours. I call a spade a spade. What I said was factual and truthful. You are just crying because you don't like the truth. And you don't want people to know about the truth. I mentioned this to your manager, and he did not care and made several excuses as to why the portion sizes were so small. Greed will be your downfall.
Food was very good and portions were generous.
Pricey but worth it esp if celebrating an important occasion. Restaurant managers were very polite and courteous, always checking in to see if everything was ok. Location is easy to find on Waikiki
I know this is sooo late but went there for my friend
I know this is sooo late but went there for my friend birthday dinner. I swear this company is the best . The manger came to me and my friend. And told me they want to thank me personally for the review I left almost 7 to 8 years ago I was like omg i forgot tbh . I was surprised and was happy I got a thank you in person even after so long. And thank you for being Antony my chef from 7 years ago again he is was best and funniest hibachi chef I met . I hope to get him. Thank you again for everything and I will be back.
Tanaka of Tokyo has three locations in Hawaii and the food
Tanaka of Tokyo has three locations in Hawaii and the food is always awesome and of a high, consistent quality. We like the Central location since it was remodeled some time ago, as the ambiance is especially nice. We had dinner with friends and truly enjoyed the experience. While we were there two groups celebrated birthdays. One was a family with elementary school-aged children and another a group of adults. Both were treated to their desserts with a birthday candle and with a rousing song by all of the staff. The kids had great fun. Dress code is casual with some small requirements you can find on the website. My husband had the lobster and steak combination, our friends each had the steak and chicken combination and I had the teriyaki chicken. We had fried rice all around. Everything tastes wonderful. Dinners come with a side salad, tsukemono (Japanese pickled veggies), white rice (upgrade to fried rice available), shrimp appetizer, grilled vegetables and ice cream (several flavors available) for dessert. What a deal! The beverage list is extensive and there's a full bar. Service is attentive and excellent - from being greeted in the traditional Japanese style at check-in, gracious escort to your table, table setting, service by all the staff, managers always assisting their staff, water always filled (sorry, it's a sore point with me!). Restaurant is clean and remarkably smoke free. Chefs are skilled and gregarious so there's always a great show. There's validated parking in the building. Ramp is a little steep and narrow but it's a great feature in the middle of Waikīkī. Loved, loved, loved it!
Other than they are racist and hold unsubstantiated grudges
Other than they are racist and hold unsubstantiated grudges eternally, the food and ambience is good. As a local Honolulu resident, I have dined here at least 25 times over the last 12 years. I was banned for life because I wrote on a comment card back in 2013 or 2014 that they provide that I recommend that they do not ask the only Caucasian person at the table if they know how to use chopsticks and if I needed a fork just because of the color of my skin. Not a single other person was asked this question as they were not Caucasian and I guess they "looked" like they know how to use chop sticks. I found out I was banned 9 months after I wrote the comment when I made a reservation there to celebrate NYE. They literally called me on NYE about an hour before my reservation to cancel me, even though I had the reservation booked for at least a month or so since you can't get anything booked on NYE without a reservation made well in advance. I was told I am cancelled because I made a comment that I recommend they don't ask just caucasians if they know how to use chopsticks and to just provide chopsticks to everyone and if a fork is needed, let the customer ask and do not assume that because a person is Caucasian, they don't know how to use chopsticks. Imagine if an Asian person went to an American style steak house and the server asked only Asian people if they need chopsticks, and assumed they don't know how to use a fork. That to me would be very disrespectful and racist IMHO. So to circumvent my ridiculous ban on dining at Tanaka of Tokyo, I have just used different names over the years to book my reservation and I never leave a comment any more. By accident, I recently made a reservation there online using my actual name. About an hour later I was called to ask me if I had dined there before as they have notes on someone with my name in their computer files. Or some words to that effect. Basically, they have been tracking my name for over 10 years to never let me eat there again. All of this because I recommended that they don't ask only caucasians if they know how to use chopsticks. It is racist and condescending. My comments were on a comment card they provided. So as a warning, these comment cards are only for you to write to tell them what a wonderful job they are doing. If you write anything negative, you will be banned for life. I was actually told that by the manager 10 or 11 years ago and I guess it's true since they called to tell me they still have a file on me. Needless to say, I did not dine there and will not book there again under a different name. I was hoping one day they would have been more reasonable about this and taken my comment as constructive criticism as I thought I was just giving them good advice. I didn't realize they just don't want to hear it.
SKIP THIS PLACE !!! The server was friendly however he
SKIP THIS PLACE !!! The server was friendly however he spilled water over my friend's Prada purse. The server was quick to call the manager over unfortunately the manager handles the situation very poorly. The manager was trying to do the BARE minimum by trying to compensate my friend's water damaged purse with a $5 appetizer. The manager offered to give a free fried rice which my friend couldn't even eat because she's vegan and the chef made the rice after he cooked steak on the grill and didn't clean it. Also the cook didn't peel my friend's salmon skin after she asked, overall I just wanted to get out of there. Never coming back, don't recommend. I regret coming here for my birthday dinner. I wish I had chosen a different place!
