The Angel Dartmouth Reviews from The Last Year
Great evening
Wonderful food and wine. Beautiful dishes. Loved it. Great menu showing off local produce. Top wine list. Will return soon
Simply Stunning
What a fantastic meal! We had the tasting menu and the recommended wine flight. The young sommelier was knowledgeable and really made the evening extra special. Of course, the food was absolutely stunning. Undoubtedly the best restaurant in Dartmouth.
Comparable to Michelin Star quality .
Visiting friends they booked The Angel for a special meal…little did we anticipate how special it would be. Only the Tasting Menu was available but that turned out to be fortunate as it was one of the best meals we have ever tasted and we had eaten at The Waterside Inn at Bray earlier in the week. The courses were perfectly balanced and showcased superb local produce. We could see Elly fully engaged in the kitchen and great service helped make the whole experience memorable for all the right reasons!
Very happy water
We recently ate at The Angel and it was superb. The welcome was warm and friendly, the staff were attentive, knowledgeable but not intrusive. The food was excellent, with lovely flavours. The wasabi crackers were out of this world
Tasty Food - Disappointing Service.
Recently had Sunday Lunch here at The Angel. The Sunday Roast was overall good. The chicken & vegetables were very tasty, but roasties were slightly overdone & the jus was quite watery with no real depth of flavour. & we enjoyed the treacle sponge & chocolate dessert but found them on the extremely small side. The service could 100% been better. They only had 2 waiters doing the full restaurant. One seemed to be doing drinks & setting tables & the other purely for food. This just didn’t work, they were not attentive or efficient with orders, clearing plates & keeping on top of drinks etc. Several tables including ourselves waited 20+ mins to have plates cleared. Their excuse kept being ‘what do you expect we’re busy’ when it was brought to their attention by customers. I feel 2 staff could definitely work that number of tables, if they were working their damn hardest. Within the first hour of being there, we had only had one starter & no mains yet which was pretty slow. When you only have your table for 1 hour & 45 mins, this isn’t good enough. We only had 45 mins to eat mains & dessert & customers coming in wanting their tables were noticeably getting annoyed. There was a 3rd member of staff working behind the bar area, doing what im not sure but she looked as if she would have rather been in jail. Having said all of that, we are keen to return to try Ellie’s tasting menu as i dont think a Sunday roast is a true representation of a chefs talent & we will hope for better service & front of house attitude. Dining out isn’t just about the food its about the full experience.
Fantastic food and exceptional service
Omg! Best meal ever. Nathan was a fantastic waiter along with the lady whose name we didn’t get. Food was amazing! Had the taster menu which was soooo tasty! Definitely recommend going there.
Fabulous
Had a wonderful break at the Dartmouth apartment which included dinner at the Angel. The food was amazing the staff first class and we had a truly wonderful evening. I would highly recommend this place. We will be back
An amazing meal
Wonderful food and a lovely atmosphere . The flavours of every course on the Tasting Menu were sublime . A most enjoyable evening .
Good food - poor service; only interested in up-selling wines and making you feel uncomfortable if you don’t agree
The tasting menu was good, varied and adventurous. The waitress was a really nice and knowledgable about the food. However, service from the Maitre D/ Sommelier was sadly lacking. Once we rejected his suggestion to upsell to the most expensive champagne, he chose to ignore us and spent the evening avoiding our table. Likewise, when asking the other wine host about the flavours and character of a particular wine, their only response was to try and replace that with one “chosen by the royals for their wedding” and not offering any information about the wine we had chosen. We were forced to serve our own wine as not at all attentive to empty glasses. This sadly significantly diminished the experience for us and made us feel unwelcome. A shame, given that this purports to be a Michelin service - we felt the stance arrogant and not reflective of my experience of Michelin restaurants.
What a disappointment!
After being quite excited, by articles we had read we decided to go for Sunday Lunch. The welcome and service were very offhand and my partner got the wrong main course. Her Bream turned out to be quite acceptable, but my beef roast turned out to be average and absolutely dominated by a huge Yorkshire pudding, more likely to be seen in a roadside café rather than a fine restaurant. The beef was ok but the rest was less than ordinary. The desserts; Brulee and a sticky toffee pudding could have easily come out of a supermarkets instant dessert counter. Not a great experience and definitely not to be repeated.
Beautiful Lunch
Had a fantastic experience here, loved every mouthful. If a staff member is reading this please thank Elly for beautiful food and for speaking to me, it made my day!! 😊 I routed for her on masterchef & GBM
Wonderful Sunday Lunch
Amazing Sunday lunch. Excellent food, drink, service, ambience. Even offered to adapt the menu to meet my dietary requirement. Will definitely come again, and would definitely recommend
A little gem in Dartmouth.
We visited the Angel for a special occasion on a Saturday and had a superb meal. Had the set/taster menu (only option on a Saturday evening) which they adjusted for dietary needs. Whilst not cheap it was worth every penny. Every dish (including the canapés which were not on the list) was excellent, for me the squid ink mussel served with they salmon was out of this world. Wine pairings were great as well, and included some unusual wines that I would not normally have tried. Waiting staff were pleasant and the sommelier was very helpful. Open kitchen gave a sense of what was happening (all very calm in there!) and the head chef was very visible.
Fantastic
My wife and I were visiting Dartmouth as an overnight stop off, and she booked The Angel as a birthday treat for me. I am lucky enough to have eaten in some top restaurants, and The Angel is right up there with the best of them. Fantastic tasting menu with all dishes beautifully presented. There is no need to worry about style over substance, though. The flavour combinations were all sublime. The staff were all excellent, attentive, and welcoming. I fail to see how recent negative reviews to the contrary can be remotely true based on my own experience. This was our second visit, and the same can be said of our first experience, too. There was a lovely atmosphere and buzz in the restaurant, which was full, and staff we equally attentive to all other diners. Furthermore, my wife has multiple severe food intolerances, and Ellie cooked a bespoke dish for her. I can not recommend The Angel highly enough.
