The Dawson Chicago Reviews from The Last Year

The empanadas are a must-get! The breakfast potatoes were standard, portions are huge, and as a MD girl, I appreciated the lump crab meat in the cake cakes. The mimosa could use less juice, otherwise the drinks were good. It's a nice spot to grab brunch overall and the service is great.
We came here for brunch on a Sunday.
Made reservation at noon and it wasn't busy! Love the interior atmosphere. Our waitress was super nice and helpful. Food was good. I had the crabcake benedict which was yummy. Friends ordered tacos, chicken and waffles and smoked salmon toast. Had monkey bread which was so delicious and tuna ceviches. Food was great! A little on the pricey side, but good food.
I am on an outdoor patio tour of my own doing in Chicago.
This was the first stop of the season. The atmosphere and the patio is incredible and my server Stephanie was wonderful. The ONLY reason it isn't five stars is that the food is just average. And the desert menu is lacking and simple at best. However.. the frozen expresso martini was spot on!!
Great service, great vibes, the patio is very nice, I'll
Great service, great vibes, the patio is very nice, I'll definitely come back, not for a Bloody Mary tho!

Went to the Dawson for brunch and it was pretty decent, but
Went to the Dawson for brunch and it was pretty decent, but probably not special enough for us to return. I got two drinks - something about Not a French Martini which was so sweet that it tasted like the kind of syrup you'd add to liquor and a mixer to make a good cocktail. The Tipperary Blond tasted kind of like lemon cleaner? Not in a bad way, weirdly, just kind of astringent. My biggest knock on this place was the breakfast poutine. It's set in front of me and there are no cheese curds on it. I asked our waitress if there was any cheese in it and she looked at me like I was crazy. I then ordered a cheese curds appetizer to accompany the poutine. They were fried so not ideal. Who has ever heard of a poutine without cheese curds!?! Our server (I think her name was Taylor) was lovely. Points for her.

The Dawson sits at the corner of Halsted and Grand with large signs on both sides, making it easy to spot. The doors are large but easy for an able bodied person to open. Immediately upon entering one is awed by the openness of the entryway. Situated within a stairwell, the ceiling is several stories high, gilded by glass, adorned by soft, elegant chandeliers. The interior is just as lovely, with real candles at each table - tall candles , not tea lights. The bathroom was beautiful with a lovely scent from a lit candle as well as the scented soap. Despite the gorgeous decor, our server, Risa, was completely down to earth and extremely helpful. She came as soon as I'd been seated but acknowledged that I might not be ready yet, just letting us know she was there. I asked for a description of one of the beers and she was able to accurately explain various components of it. Although there was a karafe of water on the table, almost every time we took a few sips, the busser refilled our glasses from the karafe, unobtrusively. I was worried that rigatoni would be too spicy but Risa was able to assure me that she could remove the spicy breadcrumbs and the chili flakes. I asked her how large the dessert was and if were very sweet. Again, Risa was able to perfectly describe it. I was impressed that there was a vegan item on the menu! Unfortunately, it wasn't something I can eat so I ordered the rigatoni and by asking for it not spicy, it was delightful. Much larger portion than I expected so I had enough left over for a lunch. My friend got the burger cooked medium and thought it was underdone but wasn't sure if that was just him. We both thought the fries were perfect. Crispy on the outside and somehow perfectly fluffy and soft on the inside. Salted but not overly so. But the real winner was the dessert. I don't have too much of a sweet tooth but love passion fruit so I had to try the creamsicle. The cake was citrusy, moist, with a texture I've only had with homemade baked goods - something I could sink my teeth into with experience more than just saccharine fluff. Not terribly sweet. The ganache was sweet but this was perfectly balanced with lemon. The fresh orange segments provided a juicy burst of flavor while the passion fruit sorbet kicked it over the top for me. It also had thin, crunchy wafers which contrasted nicely with the texture of the sponge cake and the sorbet. I'd go back just for dessert and since I don't have a huge sweet tooth, that's saying a lot!
Top 10 service of any restaurant I've ever been to.
Our server made an effort to get to know us and our taste to make smart suggestions based on her expert knowledge of the menu. We ended up getting the oysters, scrumptious Monkey Bread, Chicken Fried Lobster, Ricotta Pancakes, and Shrimp & Grits. My husband ordered the Bloody Mary, which they tweaked to his specification. He's very picky and this was one of the best! I am not a fan of tomato juice, but I must say it was very good. My ranking of the dishes would be 1. Ricotta Pancakes 2. Shrimp & Grits 3. Monkey Bread 4. Oysters 5. Chicken Fried Lobster. All of the dishes were outstanding! The nuance of flavor in each dish was spot on. Everything was perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. We visited many wonderful restaurants during our trip to Chicago, but The Dawson left the longest lasting positive impression. Next time we're in Chicago, we'll definitely be back to The Dawson for both brunch and dinner!
Such an inventive menu!!! We loved the sriracha butter
Such an inventive menu!!! We loved the sriracha butter chicken - really unique and flavorful. And can't go wrong with a burger that has bacon jam, also divine. We didn't love many of the seasonal cocktails we tried unfortunately but my mezcal cocktail was delicious. Service was pretty quick and the ambiance was so stunning. This place is big and beautifully decorated!! Highly recommend :)
I absolutely could not believe how bad our NYE was at this
I absolutely could not believe how bad our NYE was at this restaurant. This place had high expectations for. First the appetizers ran out and we had one option out of three which was oysters. Many of my party were looking g forward to a different option. Then the service was very slow in general even though it was a prefixed menu. The best part of the "ticket" we purchased was the dj NYE party upstairs. Not only was the music horrible but the DJ DID NOT DO A COUNTDOWN OR PAUSE THE MUSIC for a literal nye party. I couldn't believe that people at the bar had to yell the countdown and he didn't stop the music, do a count down or anything. He literally missed the entire point of the New Year's Eve party that was the countdown to the new year. Please do not waste your time booking nye here or any event. They clearly cannot handle it and do not have the capacity to plan it regardless of event price.

Came here for the Christmas pop up Mistletoe & Mischief to have some holiday drinks and bites. I tried the Mezcal coquito. It's a small drink but strong and flavorful. My friends got the Deck the Highball and liked that too. For food I got the tuna ceviche. It was good but I think they need to cut the tuna into smaller bites so it soaks in more of the flavors. There were a lot of flavors and it's refreshing but I've had better ceviche. The waiter had recommended the coconut curry so I got that too. I'm glad I got it because it was full of flavor. I like that they put the golden raisins on top of the rice and not inside the curry, because I'm not a fan of raisins. The coconut curry has some spice to it which I love. It was not heavy on the cream which I like, so you still get the spicy flavors. Overall the experience was great and the decor made it a fun holiday experience. I will be back to try some of the other food because it was so hard to choose amongst all the flavorful items. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. He kept refilling eaters for us and asking about drinks or anything else needed. The manger came out to thank people for stopping by and we didn't feel rushed at all like some of the holiday pop ups do to just push people in and out within 60-90 min. So it was a great girls night to catch up when home for the holidays and enjoy some delicious food.
Very fun restaurant during the holiday time.
Love all the Christmas lights and decor and the fun menu. I got a drink called Deck the Highball which was good. The service was great and so friendly. Rigatoni was good the noodles were a little hard but the star of the show were the crispy fries. They were incredible and so delicious. They came out hot and crispy.

I went to The Dawson with family and friends today for brunch and we sat on the beautiful Christmas side! It was such a vibe! The food was outstanding and the service was fantastic! Jenna was our server and made our experience memorable! I'll definitely be back here.
The Dawson is back
There was a wedding in the outdoor space so we still able to sit upstairs. It was Saturday night and they had lively atmosphere. The elote appetizer was yummy. My wife loved the lamb skewers. The roasted beet and strawberry salad was a must try also.

Pretty crazy, but cracking down will cost them a lot to maintain. They probably will lose the fight.

In my experience they will typically restore your reservation if you say it was an error.
