Ugly Butterfly Restaurant and Bar Cornwall Reviews from The Last Year
Taste and innovation at its best
Innovative, creative, sustainable dining. Excellent service, and views. The food is locally sourced, and chef and his staff manage to create dishes which use up every part of the product to create the most innovative, delicious dishes. Presentation of every dish was a work of art. The tasting menu satisfies eye and palate, and is enough to satisfy one's hunger.
Wonderful friendly staff
We had a cocktail and glass of wine. The setting was amazing with sun reflecting on the sand below. The staff were really great. Knowledgeable and very welcoming and friendly.
Simply Perfect!
I can honestly say this meal was the best I have ever had in my life and the best birthday gift! The staff were exceptional, friendly and knowledgable about every aspect of the meal, from where the ingredients were grown, to the cooking processes. The view was breathtaking, and we were lucky enough to have a clear sunny evening. I didn’t want the evening to end! Can’t wait to go back for another outstanding meal!
Great
We walked in here, not realising it was expensive, but we were very surprised that it wasn’t that expensive. It was extremely nice inside don’t get me started about the toilet. they were exquisite. Highly recommend.
Beautiful!
We popped into the ugly butterfly for a quick drink, all I can say is wow!! How beautiful can one cocktail bar be🤩! The views from the window seating area is incredible and the staff were amazing. 10/10 would recommend.
An Outstanding Restaurant
This restaurant exceeds expectations. With an underlying ethos of using sustainable local produce and eliminating food waste, the chefs at the Ugly Butterfly produce outstanding dishes which look amazing and taste even better. This is not a meal to be hurried. It is worth taking the time to relax and enjoy the food and the view. Service is impeccable and the story behind each course is enthusiastically explained by the waiters. Dining at the Ugly Butterfly is a thoroughly enjoyable experience and is perfect for a special occasion.
Excellent and should have one of those Stars
I booked the Ugly Butterfly several months ago as a present for my OH as both of us had followed Adam Handling's progression from missing out on the Master Chef title several years ago. We both had the chef's tasting menu along with the optional course of the caviar. Firstly, I must comment on our table; it was outstanding. The table overlooked the beach along with a panoramic view of the Carbis Bay; it was beautiful !! I noticed the tables within the restaurant are spaced a decent distance apart. We were sat next to a table with a couple and v. young (but well behaved) baby. This may not be everyone's liking; maybe we were lucky. Similarly, we noticed a dog being brought into the restaurant which again, may not be to everyone’s liking. I won't go through all the courses, as I'd be here all night ... but there were quite a few highlights. Each course was 'introduced' either by one of the chefs (which was nice) or one of the 2 guys who seemed to be 'front of house' (OK but not too much chat). The starter of 'Snacks' was an excellent way to kick things off and reflected the restaurant's idea on minimising waste. Although some were made with trimmings from other courses, they all tasted excellent, especially the chicken and lobster (or crab?) snacks. Our following course of warm chicken leg with a local 'grains' loaf / bun, chicken butter and liver parfait was brilliant; some lovely flavours here too. I could easily eat that again!! The following course of heritage tomato and citrus was bright, full of flavour and a great palate cleanser. We both opted for the caviar optional course which was on a blini (?) along with an umami foam. TBH, with hindsight, I'm not 'into' caviar and I should have missed this course out as I wasn’t ‘blown away’. Although my OH thought the helping of caviar was generous and the course flavourful, I didn’t think it was worth the £35ph supplement each. We then moved onto the following course of lobster tail (another trimming) with carrot and citrus which worked well together; this was a definite highlight of our meal; it was bright and tasted lovely. Our main courses of lamb and (Halon Mon?) black garlic was OK but TBH I thought my lamb was a bit chewy and the black garlic a touch over-powering. On the other hand, my OH loved hers. As a pre-desert we had a cucumber and apple palate cleanser which we both agreed was excellent; complements to Taylor (? the young pastry (?) chef) here. I'm not sure if Taylor was also responsible for the final course but our desserts of chocolate and caramel and honey, lemon and verbena were 'works of art' and tasted superb. Overall service was slick and well managed and (as said before) not too much chat and although it's a minor criticism, the serving staff were all casually dressed. Maybe that’s St Ives’ style. To end on a positive note, our meal at the Ugly Butterfly was certainly one of the best tasting menus I’ve had. I know the restaurant is mentioned on the Michelin web site, but I don’t think this is enough. Compared to other places I've visited (like 2 star Ynyshir for example and Nathan Outlaw’s restaurant’s in Port Isaac (which each have 1 star)), the Ugly Butterfly should at least have a star of its own. Would I come again? Probably ….. but I'd save up first as £375 for 2 it isn't cheap ….. and that excludes the 15% service charge !!
Exceptional and beautiful
A long awaited visit for luncheon on a wonderful summer’s day. The venue is stunning and food without question was superb in presentation and taste. This is a fixed course luncheon with several courses and two additional courses too (we did not manage these). The starter snacks were spectacular and memorable. Everything was perfectly delivered and explained. The wine list is very extensive indeed. . At such a venue , which is exceptionally smart and yet beach casual (we took the dog) you expect a lot and it exceeded expectations. Thanks UB Team.
