We were looking for a restaurant with a room to celebrate a milestone birthday. Lo Scoglio did not disappoint. We booked directly with the hotel and the accommodations were the most comfortable of any hotel we have stayed at in Italy over 42 years of traveling here. The in room air conditioning made for cozy sleeping, plenty of storage and double paned glass doors leading to the veranda to keep things nice and quiet. Typically beds in 3 and 4 star hotels in Venice, Milan, Bologna, Stressa, Lake Cuomo, even the Hilton property in Rome was a 'tad firm' and have been more like sleeping on box springs. Our bed at Lo Scoglio was quite comfortable a thick foam technology mattress so that no matter which side one sleeps on it is comfortable. This was our first visit to the Amalfi Coast. The scenery is spectacular, if you like sheer cliffs rising from an aqua blue sea. The room included a broad terrace with a view of the Mediterranean and surrounding mountains. We booked our stay for 4 days and nights, just to get a real feel for the place, and we enjoyed three dinners at the restaurant and visited the other restaurants and cafés along the marina for dinner and lunch and each place was well staffed, friendly and prompt, and as any seasoned traveler can attest, the enjoyment of the food is also about the location and expectation. Upon our arrival we were able to join the chef in the kitchen in preparing our rendition of the Spaghetti de Nurano (with zucchini) and I can see why Stanley and his bride were so impressed. Lo Scoglio is indeed a long way to go for simple (but not simplistic) food, but if you can afford to find yourself in this remote part of the world, why not 'do as the Romans do'? It is something one can take home and prepare with ease--once you know how--and savor the memory and the flavor of Massa Lubrense. The service we received was preambled with 'no problem' and indeed there were no problems. The pace of the place is quite serene, it is a family run business and their attention to a no hurries, no worries, attitude it is definitely 'beach o'clock' at Lo Scoglio and the pace suited us just fine. The hotel hired our drivers to and from Napoli (we paid handsomely for them, but to NOT drive to get there was worth every euro). We took a local bus to Sorrento one day totally great, but getting home included hiring a Taxi, but it was an expense well worth it. The last night, having tired of pasta and seafood, we ordered the carne--steaks, filets and were treated to a very nice portion and the red wine recommendation was perfect with our meal. To be sure, this is not 5 star accommodation and I didn't see a Michelin plaque, and they make no pretense about that, but we were prepared to embrace the experience with an open mind and with the help of the wonderful staff, especially Nino, we were treated like stars. I would recommend it as a restaurant with a room as one will not want to navigate the roads after a hearty meal and a bottle of wine. If you go for lunch, leave yourself plenty of daylight to egress from the locale. I think Lo Scoglio may be a bit overwhelmed by the fame of being a favourite of Stanley Tucci, but we would have missed it and a really pleasant time in a place in Italy we never would have visited otherwise.
